The National Judicial Council (NJC) has recommended Justice Kudirat Motonmori Kekere-Ekun for appointment as the next Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN). The NJC’s decision was made in a meeting on Thursday and communicated to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for final approval.
Justice Kekere-Ekun, a seasoned jurist with extensive experience on the Supreme Court bench, is set to succeed the outgoing Chief Justice, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola. Her appointment, if confirmed by President Tinubu, will make her the second woman to hold the position of Chief Justice in Nigeria’s history.
Born in Lagos State, Justice Kekere-Ekun has had a distinguished legal career, having served as a judge in various capacities, including her current role as a Justice of the Supreme Court. She is known for her incisive legal reasoning and commitment to justice.
The recommendation has been met with widespread approval from legal professionals and analysts, who see her appointment as a step towards maintaining the integrity of Nigeria’s judiciary.

Justice Kekere-Ekun’s nomination now awaits President Tinubu’s approval, after which it will be sent to the Senate for confirmation. If confirmed, she will lead the Nigerian judiciary in its continued efforts to uphold the rule of law and ensure justice for all citizens.
