The Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, has passed away following a brief illness. Representing the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency of Ogun State, Onanuga died on Wednesday, January 15, 2025.
A statement by the House spokesman, Akintunde Rotimi, confirmed the lawmaker’s passing and highlighted her remarkable contributions to Nigeria’s political landscape. Born on December 2, 1965, Onanuga first joined the National Assembly in 2019 on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and was re-elected in 2023.
During her time in the 9th Assembly, she chaired the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development, advocating for policies aimed at empowering women and improving social welfare. Her appointment as Deputy Chief Whip in the 10th Assembly saw her display exceptional leadership and a strong commitment to legislative discipline.
Rotimi praised her dedication to public service, describing her as “a visionary leader, a passionate advocate for her constituents, and a vibrant lawmaker whose intellect, humility, and drive for excellence earned her admiration from colleagues and constituents alike.”
