The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, has officially declared Sunday, March 30, 2025, as Eid-el-Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan, following confirmation from the National Moon Sighting Committees that the new moon has been sighted in Nigeria.
This announcement comes amid rumors suggesting that the fasting period would be extended until Monday. The Sultan’s palace has strongly refuted these claims, blaming misinformation spread by certain English-language newspapers even before the official moon sighting report was issued.
The palace emphasized that all official pronouncements on religious observances should come from credible sources to prevent the spread of falsehoods. The Sultan, who serves as the President General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, reiterated that such announcements follow due process based on verified moon sighting reports.
Earlier, Saudi Arabia had confirmed the sighting of the Shawwal crescent, announcing Sunday as Eid-el-Fitr. The confirmation was made public through Haramain’s official platform, a key source of information for the global Muslim community.
The Sultan’s palace urges the public to rely on official channels for updates on religious matters to avoid unnecessary confusion.
