In a landmark moment for the Catholic Church, American-born Robert Francis Prevost has been elected as the 267th pope, becoming the first pontiff from the United States. The Vatican made the announcement, confirming that Prevost would assume the papal name, Leo XIV.
A known moderate and longtime ally of Pope Francis, Prevost’s elevation marks a significant shift in the Church’s leadership. He brings with him decades of missionary experience, particularly from his years of service in Peru, where he was deeply involved in pastoral and community work.
Prevost’s selection is seen as a continuation of the pastoral and reform-oriented legacy of his predecessor, Pope Francis.
