Abuja, August 25, 2024 – The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has confirmed a deadly attack on police officers at Wuse Junction, Abuja, allegedly carried out by members of the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), also known as the Shi’ite group.

According to a press statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, two police officers lost their lives in the unprovoked assault, while three others were left unconscious and are currently receiving treatment in a hospital. The attack also resulted in the destruction of three police patrol vehicles, which were set ablaze by the assailants.
The incident occurred at a police checkpoint near the traffic light at Wuse Junction. The attackers, reportedly armed with machetes, knives, and improvised explosive devices (locally made bombs in bottles with kerosene), descended on the officers without warning.

In response to the incident, the FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Benneth C. Igweh, condemned the attack and vowed that those responsible would be brought to justice. The police have made several arrests, and the situation is now under control, with normalcy restored in the area.
